African Centre for Media Excellence

The African Centre for Media Excellence (Uganda) has been training, mentoring, and coaching journalists in East Africa for more than a decade. With support from the European Union and the Democratic Governance Facility, ACME has provided in-depth investigative training to more than 100 rural and urban journalists in Uganda since 2020, and more than a dozen from Kenya and Tanzania in 2022. It also commands a popular following, with 3 million site users in 2023, and 465,000 subscribers on its Youtube channel. According to the outlet, “The environment in which we operate is highly complex and hostile. The Ortega-Murillo regime exerts tight control over information and suppresses any form of dissent. Independent media and journalists face constant threats, arbitrary detentions, and criminalization.”

And it plays an active role in producing high-quality investigative journalism that uncovers hidden truths, exposes corruption, and holds power accountable.

The Investigative Media Lab is an umbrella center for production and practical/project-based training.  The Lab offers courses and training modules to current and future journalists on investigative journalism and open-source investigative methods. The Lab is the first of its kind in Georgia that brings together local and international students, professors, and media practitioners specializing in investigative and data analysis.

The IML is in the process to develop an environmental-focused strategy, integrating research on ecofriendly investigative journalism practices, promoting sustainable media production, and collaborating with experts in environmental issues for impactful reporting. We are emphasizing the use of digital platforms to reduce paper consumption and exploring partnerships with organizations committed to environmental conservation for mutual support and awareness. Lost in Europe

Lost in Europe is a cross-border nonprofit journalism project that investigates the fate and exploitation of thousands of child migrants that go missing after arriving in Europe.  Comprising 23 investigative journalists from 12 European countries, including the Netherlands, Germany, Italy and the UK, the team has already revealed the hidden plight of unaccompanied child migrants as one of the most pressing and undercovered issues in the world. Its findings include a revelation that 18,000 unaccompanied child migrants went missing from shelters and official registries in Europe between 2018 and 2020 alone. Lost in Europe also tells the stories of individual children, and uncovers the bad actors who exploit them – from drug gangs to human traffickers and the sex industry. The team won the inaugural Investigative Journalism for Europe (IJ4EU) Impact Award in 2021 for an investigation that tracked 60 Vietnamese children from Dutch asylum shelters to labor roles at cannabis farms and nail salons in the UK.

The Reporter (Taiwan) is a non-profit media organization founded by The Reporter Foundation and relies on public donation. They strive to produce in-depth reports, track issues at stake and conduct investigative journalism. The Stabile Center for Investigative Journalism is dedicated to training students for distinguished careers in investigative journalism. Candidates for the Columbia University’s Master of Science degree are able to pursue this specialization, which is platform-neutral and is taken in addition to the traditional M.S. curriculum. Stabile students are required to take skills classes and seminars in investigative reporting.
