GIJN Launches GIJC27 Website, Announces Dates for 15th Global Investigative Journalism Conference

The Global Investigative Journalism Conference is the world’s largest international gathering of investigative reporters and editors, and GIJC27 will be its 15th iteration. The conference will feature training on the latest tools and techniques, cutting-edge workshops, and extensive networking, and brainstorming sessions. GIJC27 will be held from Wednesday, October 20 through Saturday, October 23, 2027 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. A pre-conference day will take place on Tuesday, October 19.

GIJN has also now launched gijc2027.org, the conference website where journalists can learn more about the upcoming event and host city and — in the coming days and weeks — suggest ideas for panels, apply for fellowships, register to attend, and submit investigations for our Global Shining Light Award (GSLA).

The conference venue for GIJC27 will be de Deolen ICC Rotterdam, an iconic concert and congress center located in the heart of the city. With over 30 halls in a central location, it is the perfect venue for international events and conventions ranging from intimate symposia for 150 people to large conferences with 3,000 visitors.

The Global Investigative Journalism Network (GIJN) is excited to have as its local co-host De Vereniging van Onderzoeksjournalisten (VVOJ) – the Dutch-Flemish Association of Investigative Journalists — which also hosted the 3rd Global Investigative Journalism Conference in Amsterdam in 2005. Founded in 2002, VVOJ plays an outsized role in promoting quality investigative reporting throughout the region and recognizes the best of the profession with its annual De Loep (“The Magnifying Glass”) Prize. VVOJ also will be hosting GIJC27 in coordination with regional partners Journalismfund Europe and Free Press Unlimited.

VVOJ Board chair Débora Votqueene agreed. “It makes you very humble, because you see the importance of the work being done worldwide,” she said. “We at VVOJ are fighting for investigative journalism in the Netherlands and Flanders, but this battle is nothing compared to what so many reporters face in the rest of the world; where many have to fear for their lives and their families. The democratic importance of the work they do makes us very humble ahead of next year’s Global Conference.”

The Global Investigative Journalism Conference is held every two years. Since the first gathering in Copenhagen in 2001, the GIJC has brought together thousands of journalists from 140 countries and territories. Later conferences were held in Copenhagen (2003), Amsterdam (2005), Toronto (2007), Lillehammer (2008), Geneva (2010), Kyiv (2011), and Rio de Janeiro (2013). Rio was the 8th GIJC, and the first in the southern hemisphere, and was followed by a return to Lillehammer (2015) and then our first GIJC in Africa, Johannesburg (2017), followed by Hamburg (2019). The GIJC was held online in 2021 and resumed in-person meeting two years later in Gothenburg (2023). In 2025, GIJC was held for the first time in Asia, in Kuala Lumpur, attracting more than 1,500 participants, with 350-plus speakers from nearly 100 countries. As in previous years, GIJC27 will recognize the biennial Global Shining Light Award winners, honoring the best of investigative journalism done under threat, duress, or difficult conditions.

Likewise, GIJC27 will include a robust fellowship program to bring journalists from the Global South and other regions to the conference.
