After Gothenburg: Call for Proposals for GIJC27 Extended

GIJN has extended the deadline for proposals for the Global Investigative Journalism Conference to be held in 2027. Member organizations that would like to be considered for hosting GIJC27 now have until May 15, 2024, to submit their applications.

In the meantime, the Global Investigative Journalism Network, which oversees the conference, started to review the submissions received for the 14th Global Investigative Journalism Conference, to be held in 2025.

The Global Investigative Journalism Conference is the world’s premier international gathering of investigative journalists. Held every two years, the conferences have trained thousands of journalists, sparked hundreds of investigations and collaborative projects, and played a key role in the global spread of investigative reporting over the past 22 years. With a focus on training and networking, GIJC23 in Gothenburg, Sweden saw a record number of more than 2,100 attendees from over 130 countries and territories.

Producing this biennial event requires intense planning, fundraising, and operational skills by its hosts, but the effort is worth it because of the high standards of GIJC speakers and sessions, its global impact, and the way it raises the profile and stature of the organizers.N

Note: Potential hosts must be a GIJN member. It is possible for member organizations to collaborate and co-share the host role in one country.

If your organization would like to host GIJC27, now is the time to assemble and submit a proposal.

The new deadline to submit a proposal for GIJC27 is May 15, 2024.

The decision on the 2027 conference hosts will be made by GIJN in consultation with its board of directors.

The organization that is selected to host GIJC27 will team up with the GIJN Secretariat to finance and organize the conference. We recommend detailed proposals of at least eight pages (in PDF) that discuss:

• Fundraising strategy, including the host organization’s ability to find funding and sponsorships. (The average cost of a GIJC ranges from US$750,000 to US$1,000,000+)
• Ability of the host organization to obtain local support.
• Host organization’s experience at organizing conferences.
• Host organization’s experience in management.
• Advantages of holding the GIJC in the suggested city, including environment, transportation, logistics, security, travel visa availability, and cost.
• Estimated budget for the conference.
• A description of the potential venue/s (hotel, conference center) for the conference.
• Suggested focus and structure of conference panels, workshops, and other events.
• Ability to work with the GIJN Secretariat on planning, programming, fundraising, and logistics.

Proposal Submission Guidelines

1. Fill in this submission form.
2. Make a copy of this spreadsheet and prepare a detailed budget.
3. Prepare all the proposal information (submitted in the embedded form) with relevant images of the potential conference venue in PDF format.
4. Email both the budget spreadsheet and the PDF with the proposal information to secretariat@gijn.org.
