25 Journalists Selected for GIJN’s Second Digital Threats Training Course

GIJN is pleased to announce the launch of the second cohort of the Digital Threats Training Course program. Applications for the third cohort will open next year.

Our six-week, tuition-free online program will provide selected reporters with the expertise needed to deliver cyber and digital threats investigations across a range of beats and topics. The 25 journalists in the second cohort were selected from 140 applicants and come from more than 22 countries across Europe, the Middle East, the Americas, Asia, and Africa. Participants come from independent media organizations and larger outlets with local, regional, and international reach.

“While digital threats increase and get more complex, working with the right tools and resources to investigate them is key for investigative journalists around the world,” said GIJN Executive Director Emilia Díaz-Struck. “We are excited to welcome our new cohort of journalists to the course, and are honored to have an exceptional group of experienced instructors, who will help advance the work investigative reporters do on this topic.”

This program, which starts November 8, is led by investigative reporter Craig Silverman from ProPublica, and offers online classes that also features experts such as freelance journalist Jane Lytvynenko (The Guardian, BuzzFeed News, Harvard Shorenstein Center); online security specialist Etienne “tek” Maynier from Human Rights Watch; and independent researcher Luis Assardo, also with Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

Participants will have access to office hours throughout the program to help develop final reporting pitches.

“This second group of distinguished fellows from around the world will learn the skills and knowledge needed to investigate spyware, disinformation, trolling, and the digital environment,” said Craig Silverman, the lead instructor. “It’s exciting to work with GIJN and a new group of journalists to continue to grow the global community of journalists working to combat digital threats.”
