There’s nothing like a good photographer to bring alive an investigative story. One of the worst crimes that investigative journalists commit is spending months on a great story, and then only minutes on the presentation. Working with photojournalists who know their craft (along with designers and graphic artists) can be one of the real pleasures of putting a big project together. We’re fortunate that a new handbook on using photography for investigations was just published: Investigative Photography: Supporting a Story with Pictures, by CJ Clarke, Damien Spleeters, and Juliet Ferguson.
There’s plenty of activity as we move closer to the Global Investigative Journalism Conference in mid-October. Our just-released newsletter includes an update on some of the great speakers coming to the conference, as well as visa information for entering Brazil, GIJC13’s call for research papers, and a thanks to our terrific partners around the world who are helping make this extraordinary event possible. Here’s our next report from this year’s Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) conference: The second day at IRE’s 2013 conference is also a busy one, with more than 60 panels and workshops, and plenty of networking opportunities. More than 1,200 journalists are at the San Antonio, Texas, gathering, which today featured mentoring sessions in which senior journalists shared tips and experience with younger ones, lots of data journalism training, and panels ranging from managing investigative teams to following international money trails.
The Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) Conference is the largest gathering of investigative journalists in the United States. This year, more than 1,000 journalists are coming together here in San Antonio, Texas, to attend 100-plus panels, workshops, and roundtables. Many of the activities here are hands-on sessions in which experts share useful tips and tricks for everyday work. Nonprofits have been touted as a possible alternative to the collapsing business models of for-profit news. But a study released last week by the Pew Research Center points to the fragility of that model and also to the need for a more concerted effort to shore it up. The study identified 172 nonprofit news outlets throughout the U.S. – two-thirds of these were launched only since the 2008 financial crisis. While the recession has accelerated the closure of newspapers and the downsizing of news staffs throughout the country, it has given rise to a boom in nonprofit news.

Six journalism organizations from five countries are the newest members of the Global Investigative Journalism Network, the association of nonprofit groups working to spread investigative reporting around the world. They bring the GIJN’s membership to 88 groups in 40 countries.
All the new member groups are deeply engaged in reporting. They include the Centre for Investigative Journalism in Slovenia; the Washington, D.C.-based International Reporting Project; Fundación MEPI in Mexico; Northern Ireland’s The Muckraker; and two groups from the Caribbean: the Centro de Periodismo Investigativo, based in Puerto Rico; and Haiti’s Ayiti Kale Je (that’s Creole for Haiti Grassroots Watch).
