New Global Consortium for Investigative Journ Educators

IJEC

Professors from 11 countries gathered at the Global Investigative Journalism Conference.

This week the Investigative Journalism Education Consortium begins a new initiative in bringing together journalism educators from throughout the world who teach investigative reporting.

The idea to expand the range of IJEC emerged from the Global Investigative Journalism Conference held in October in Rio de Janeiro where the conference organized, for the first time, a professor track of sessions and presentation of papers.

Professors from six continents found they had much in common and were eager to continue the conversations and share research and teaching methods.

The track was organized and coordinated by Brant Houston, professor and Knight Chair in Investigative Reporting at the University of Illinois, with assistance from the Global Investigative Journalism Network Deputy Director Gabriela Manuli and Executive Director David Kaplan, and by four judges: Rosental Alves, University of Texas at Austin, Steve Doig of Arizona State University, Anton Harber of Wits University in Johannesburg, and Amy Schmitz Weiss of San Diego State University.

After discussion with the original founders of the consortium and with the Network, we decided to have IJEC.org as the site as a destination for global work.

As a first step, we have published the papers from the conference. Each paper is in its original language – English, Spanish or Portuguese – and explores issues or ideas in investigative journalism or the teaching of it.

In the coming months, we will collect more syllabi, continue to publish or link to  student and faculty work and other resources such as the Investigative News Network andInvestigative Reporters and Editors. We also will have a more active social media presence.

Please feel free to join us in this new and exciting project and share your thoughts and experience.
