Tips on Crafting a Great Pitch

“Get used to being rejected.” That’s the first piece of advice Aleszu Bajak, a lecturer at Northeastern’s School of Journalism, offers up to freelancers. Bajak’s slides outline tips for effective pitch emails, including information on what the point of the pitch is, why it is relevant now, why you are the person to write it, what sources and data you have, how much space you’ll need and why the story is important for the publication to cover. Bajak, who has freelanced for some top publications, reminds freelancers that the pitch should be well-written without any typos or grammatical errors, but does not have to be overly formal.
