Velocidad to Help Latin American Startups

A new initiative will identify and invest $1.5 million in promising news media startups in Latin America. Velocidad (which means “Velocity” in Spanish) is supported by the International Center for Journalists, SembraMedia and Luminate. The funders plan a rigorous selection process. A total of 75 digital news outlets will move forward in the first round, 25 semifinalists will continue to the second and eight to 10 will be chosen to receive investments.

New Report on Global South Media Startups

Researchers at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs spoke to 26 outlets from the Global South between July and December 2018, asking editors and founders to describe their business models and to reflect on their mission, their successes and failures and how they survive. Among others, they spoke to Daily Maverick (South Africa), Frontier Myanmar (Myanmar), Himal Southasian (recently forced out of Nepal and now based in Sri Lanka), Malaysiakini (Malaysia), Oxpeckers (covering Southern Africa), and Sin Embargo (Mexico). Researchers found that, despite breaking news, having impact and planting themselves firmly in their local communities, the outlets are mostly still dependent on donor funding.

IJNet Arabic Launches MENA Mentor Center

Digital entrepreneurs in the MENA region are invited to apply for IJNet Arabic's fifth annual Mentoring Center for MENA media entrepreneurs. During the program, IJNet mentors work closely with their mentees to establish business and media plans, implementing strategies and guiding them by evaluating and studying each project's needs. Mentees will be trained in written and visual content as well as digital marketing, social media and other key aspects of media entrepreneurship. Participants will also study the media industry in their own countries and learn strategies to keep their startups competitive.

Global Media Startup Competition Launches

The Startups for News competition is now open for startups with innovative products and services that could help media organizations work more efficiently. Applications for the program, organized by the Global Editors Network in partnership with, are open until January 1, 2018, after which the international jury will select 16 startups to participate in online pitch battles. Eight finalists will be selected to pitch on stage in front of around 750 media leaders at the GEN Summit in Lisbon, where the winner of the competition will be chosen.

INN Starts Backing Nonprofit News Startups

After a 19-month wait to secure its own 501(c)3 status, the Investigative News Network (INN) has started to sponsor nonprofit news projects. “Fiscal sponsorship allows these early-stage nonprofits to accept donations from philanthropists and foundations, allows INN to provide rigorous financial oversight,” says INN’s Kevin Davis. “With this support, new nonprofit projects can increase their chance of long-term success.”
