South Africa’s prestigious Taco Kuiper Awards for Investigative Journalism were announced last week in Johannesburg. First prize was shared with GIJN member amaBhungane’s Susan Comrie and News24’s Kyle Cowan, with runner up named as the Daily Maverick’s Pauli van Wyk. All of the winning investigations centred around corruption and “state capture,” with Comrie winning for her Regiment Capital series — a financial services company involved with state enterprises including the South African Airports Company, South African Airways and Transnet — Cowan for his work on Bosasa, a company deeply implicated in long term and brazen bribery scandals with state officials, and Van Wyk for her work into South Africa’s tax revenue services.
