Kickstarter Campaigns Break Records

Kickstarter crowdfunding campaigns in journalism, photography and documentaries all set records in April for the most money raised in those categories. Kazoo Magazine, focused on encouraging girls to be smart and strong, raised US$171,215 with 3,136 backers; The Trioplan soap bubble lens raised $556,000 from 850 backers; and a campaign to save Frank Zappa’s film vault, create a documentary, and unearth his unreleased music raised US1.13 million with 8,688 backers.

Kickstarter Adds Official Category for Journalism

Kickstarter, the big crowdfunding platform, has finally added a separate category for journalism projects. "It’s more important than ever to make sure journalists have the tools and resources to try new things," the site announced, "whether they’re professionals looking for innovative ways of funding and sharing their work, or ordinary folks with a hunger to tell the stories around them."

Support for Independent Media in Ukraine

The German network for Reporting on Eastern Europe (n-ost), and SCOOP, the Danish project to support investigative reporting in Eastern Europe, have managed to raise 8.400 EUR for three important Ukrainian media: the independent tv-station, the weekly Kyiv Post and the Institute of Mass Information.

Top 10 Crowdfunding Sites for Fundraising

Crowdfunding, or collaborative funding via the web, is one of the standouts for growth in this evolving collaborative economy. The Crowdfunding Industry Report by Massolution put out data showing the overall crowdfunding industry has raised $2.7 billion in 2012, across more than 1 million individual campaigns globally. In 2013 the industry is projected to grow to $5.1 billion.
