Tips for Collaborating with Scientists and Experts • Stéphane Horel
In this masterclass video, Stéphane Horel, investigative journalist at Le Monde and lead of the mutli-award-winning Forever Pollution Project, shares her approach to working with scientists and other experts on investigative stories.
Horel argues that expert-reviewed journalism only works if experts are treated as team members rather than sources: knowing your subject well enough to brainstorm as equals, building a win-win relationship where your data can fuel their research, and staying clear about who does what along the way. She explains why this cross-pollination of methods produces work neither side could do alone, why giving experts proper credit matters, and why finding the right pace between fast-moving journalism and slower academic timelines is often the biggest challenge of all.
