Panama Papers Source Issues Statement

In an 1800-word statement, the anonymous source behind the Panama Papers massive leak cited inequality and corruption as motivations and hinted at more revelations to come. The source also called for better protection for whistleblowers and conditionally offered to make the documents available to government authorities. The statement was titled "The Revolution Will Be Digitized."

UN Rapporteur Calls for Whistleblower Protection

In a new report released this week, the U.N. Special Rapporteur on freedom of expression has called on states to protect the right of whistle-blowers to disclose information in the public interest and to uphold the general principle of source confidentiality in law and practice. Among the measures called for are stronger laws and regulations. Basic protections" in these areas, the report notes, "are critical to an effective right to freedom of expression, accountability and democratic governance.”
