A Case Study in Bad Reporting: Rolling Stone’s Campus Rape Story

When Rolling Stone magazine published “A Rape on Campus" last November -- on a gang rape at a Virginia college fraternity -- it failed to verify key elements of the victim's story. Rolling Stone asked the Columbia Journalism School to investigate what went wrong. The failures "involve basic, even routine journalistic practice - not special investigative effort," the report found.

Profile: In Azerbaijan, a Journalist Under Siege

Khadija Ismayilova is a rarity in Azerbaijan—an award-winning journalist who has exposed illegality and misdeeds by autocratic leader Ilham Aliyev and his family. Ismayilova’s most recent run-in with the law began in January, when she was arrested for attending an unsanctioned anti-government rally in the center of the city. She was sentenced to sweep the streets.
