How Facebook Hurts Independent Media

Is Facebook running an experiment that shunts independent media to the periphery in countries where it is needed most? Stevan Djovinvic, director of GIJN member KRIK, a nonprofit investigative newsroom in Serbia, is sounding the alarm on how small countries have become "an unwilling laboratory for Facebook’s experiments on user behavior." KRIK's award-winning stories, one of the few independent voices left in Serbia's narrow media market, are no longer appearing on the Facebook news feed.

Serbia’s Media Stage Blackout Protest

Serbia’s independent media staged a blackout last week to warn against what they say is President Aleksandar Vucic’s muzzling of the press by intimidation, threats and financial pressure. Dozens of Serbian media outlets and NGOs darkened their web pages for one hour at noon on September 28, with a white inscription warning: “This is what it looks like when there is no free press!” Vucic, a former extreme nationalist who now calls himself a reformist, has dismissed the accusations.
