Lead poisoning of the water supply for Flint, Michigan, has made headlines in the United States for weeks. Lost in the coverage is that the scandal was revealed by a team of more than two dozen students and research scientists at Virginia Tech, which spent much of the past year analyzing and then publicizing the contamination. They call it "open science” research collaboration with residents of a community -- and we may see more of this.
