Asian Investigative Journalism Conference Canceled by GIJN

GIJN regrets to announce that it is canceling this year’s Asian Investigative Journalism Conference, which was slated for October 16-18 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Given the unpredictability of the coronavirus and its potential impact on attendees, GIJN asked for assurances that the conference could be canceled if necessary. The hotel refused and insisted that GIJN provide a 100% guarantee of all conference costs. Instead, GIJN will begin work on next year’s Global Conference and a host of new projects, and promises to return to Asia in 2022.

Uncovering Asia: Highlights of #IJAsia18

The completely sold out Uncovering Asia 2018, the third Asian investigative journalism conference, was a four-day blitz of intense exchange of knowledge, networking and building new investigative partnerships. A total of 440 journalists from 48 countries convened in Seoul, Korea from October 4-7 for the largest ever gathering of investigative journalists in the region.

The conference is the premier gathering of investigative and data journalists in Asia, held only once every two years. This year we’re holding #IJAsia18 in the center of South Korea’s bustling capital, at the four-star Millennium Seoul Hilton, and we’ve got an all-star lineup.

As we gather for the second Asian Investigative Journalism Conference, this seems a good time to share again with our colleagues where the Global Investigative Journalism Network and its conferences come from. It was a simple idea at the end of the 20th century — to gather the world’s investigative journalists to share their knowledge with each other — that gave birth to GIJN, which has now grown to 138 member organizations in 62 countries.

Spotlight’s Robinson To Keynote Asia IJ Conference

GIJN and its partners are excited to officially open registration for Uncovering Asia — the second Asian Investigative Journalism Conference, to be held in Kathmandu, Nepal, on Sept. 23-25. Our keynote speaker will be Walter “Robby” Robinson, who led the Boston Globe Spotlight team’s Pulitzer Prize winning investigation into the Catholic Church sex abuse scandal. Robinson was played by actor Michael Keaton in the movie Spotlight.
